Morocco and More
November has just flown by and in just one short month it will be Christmas day!
On the 1st of November Rita and I, with six others from our church, flew out to Marrakech for a week of outreach. We stayed in a hotel that was positioned right by the main square and we had breakfast on the roof each day.
We had an amazing time and what follows are some of the highlights. Here we are praying around the city walls. We found out afterward that it was 12 miles. To be honest we did it over two days, seven the first day and five a few days later.
We went to a small Berber village at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains staying overnight.We drew water from a well, helped in making a traditional tarjine meal, and had a mint tea making competition (Rita and I came third out of four and ours was disgusting) and generally seeing how these wonderful people lived. Here you see me with our host who spoke great English.
Anyone for mint tea?
On Sunday we attended the International Church and here you see me getting a shoe shine on the way to church. Well.. the preacher can't have dirty shoes.
Monday the team left for a day in Casablanca without us because Rita had been sick all night (something she had eaten the day before) They had a good day praying at various places, and visiting one of the biggest Mosques in the world that holds 600,000.
On the last day we went to a market town about one hour away. Once a week the Berbers come down from the villages in the mountains to the market that has everything they could possibly need. No car park here, just a donkey park.
On the way home I was hoping for a few hours sleep on the plane, but got talking to a guy next to me. "What do you do" he asked. "I work for a church in Hove" I replied. Oh he said "I’m an atheist". That started a conversation that lasted for much of the flight with him asking lots of questions about Christianity.
We have been busy in church helping to run a four week ‘Social Justice’ course and speaking at meetings. That includes Rita who had a major speaking engagement last week. It was at the Ladies breakfast at the church, where over 60 attended. By all accounts she was much appreciated (they wouldn’t let me attend) but my comment that perhaps this was the start of her International speaking ministry, was not appreciated!!!
Well that is it for now. The next one will be after Christmas.
